About Austin Sevens.
The first Austin Seven was built in 1922 and changed the concept of motoring by providing a practical, robust form of four wheeled transport at a price affordable by a sector of the public previously unlikely to become car owners.
Its small size was revolutionary, but it had a number of advanced engineering features one of which was the introduction of four wheel brakes, previously found only on the most expensive cars.
Racing and sports models were produced and the car achieved speeds of 86 mph in 1923, its first year of racing. Standard cars were capable of 40-50 mph and 50 mpg and in 1924 cost £149.
By 1928 Austin Sevens had reduced in price to just £125 and their reliability was proven in a 2,000 km endurance test in which an Austin Seven achieved an average speed of 66 mph.
By 1936 Austin Seven racing cars were fitted with overhead cam engines developing 116 bhp and capable of 130 mph.
As the 1930’s progressed, sales declined and production of the Austin Seven ceased 1939. It is believed that about 300,000 Austin Sevens were made.
